I like the color yellow or why grandmas are sometimes wrong

02.11.2019

Dear Human Being,

Welcome to my second blog post! I am glad you are reading my second letter to you. I have a favor to ask - can you get me a yellow raincoat? Or yellow rubber boots? Or a yellow umbrella from my favorite TV show? I happen to own very few yellow things. Why? That is the topic of this post.

My grandma is convinced that yellow is an unlucky color for my family. To this day, I have no idea why - maybe it simply doesn't go with her skin tone or maybe she has a dramatic heartbreak story associated with a yellow bracelet. But what does the color palette of my grandma have to do with us, potential (or an accomplished) overthinkers? Let's take a moment (who am I kidding, take a day) to think about this - I have hated and actively avoided color yellow for my entire life without knowing why. Now imagine millions of people performing actions, in absolute consciousness, without knowing why. Ultimately, because they were told so or taught so or have seen so. Do you know why you are doing what you have always done? Do you know why you pour milk before cereal or why you fall in love? Do you have any idea why you wake up every three hours at night or why you won't ever fall madly in love with math? Don't worry if you don't. I didn't even know why I never wore yellow.

There is something lucrative about sharing your knowledge with others and expecting them to take it as it is. Sadly, it has backfired many times for me. So instead of being pleased and grateful for every piece of advice from whatever source, I propose to be a manager - grumpy and grungy manager with a thick mustache, who looks through the documents nodding, armed with a pen to cross out and leave notes on the margins. After all, it is the manager who submits the documents and lives the consequences.

Imagine if we still believed the Earth was the center of the solar system simply because we were told so. The concept of accepting knowledge without questioning is absurd in the context of science. Ironically, it is considered the wisdom in everyday topics like pickling tomatoes, trying to be skinny, paying taxes and marrying virgins. On this note, the question of the day is:

Can we science through everyday life?

We need a new holiday. Firstly, no one minds a day-off, secondly, we need time to hit pause and ask "why".

I dare you to ask "why", dear human being. Ask me why I am writing this piece. Ask me why I care. Ask yourself why you are still reading. "Why" is the kind of question that comes crashing to your cabin in the middle of a night and tells you that you are a wizard. It is the kind of a question that sets you free from living in a cupboard under the stairs.

In conclusion, I have a confession to make. I like the color yellow and I wear it. Heck, it might be my favorite color. Not because I am a rebel, but because I don't see why not.

P.S. The only downside though is that many "why"s don't have an answer. Or maybe their answer is just 42.

P.S.S. If you are now wondering why 42 - ask me.
